About Vulcanus - Tata International Blacksmith Competition and Festival

A Celebration of Fire, Iron, and Tradition in the Historic Heart of Tata

Location: Tata Castle, Castle grounds (Tata, Hungary)

Date: 23-25 July, 2027

In the summer of 2027, one of the continent's oldest crafts will come to life once again within the ancient walls of Tata Castle. The Vulcanus-Tata International Blacksmithing Competition and Festival will take place, paying a fitting tribute to traditional craftsmanship while also embracing the bold, creative energy of the modern age.

The finest master blacksmiths from across Europe and Hungary will gather to demonstrate that iron is not merely a material to be shaped, but something that can truly come to life in the hands of a skilled artisan.

Competition Categories and Challenges

  • Traditional Blacksmithing (Set Theme): In honor of the Esterházy 300 anniversary, the featured theme in the traditional category will be the GRIFFIN. Participants will bring this mythological creature to life using classical blacksmithing techniques and time-honored craftsmanship.

  • Modern / Contemporary Blacksmithing (Open Theme): A category without a prescribed theme, dedicated to those who appreciate innovative forms, bold solutions, and contemporary metalwork.

  • Pre-Made Works Category: An exhibition and competition showcasing the finest pieces of craftsmanship, created by participants in advance of the event.

Why Should You Be There?

  • A Living Craft in the Castle Courtyard: Authentic blacksmithing forges, glowing-hot iron, and the rhythmic sound of hammers ringing out against the stone walls of Tata Castle.

  • Professional Exchange: A celebration of uncompromising craftsmanship, where classical artistry and daring contemporary designs stand side by side in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

  • An International Community: An opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with the finest master blacksmiths from the Carpathian Basin and across Europe.
